Oldham Coliseum

Acting on the issues you care about

Jim McMahon has been a longstanding supporter of the Oldham Coliseum Theatre for over two decades.

As council leader he secured funding for it’s historic home on Fairbottom Street, fixing urgent works which could have seen it close. This alone meant it was able to continue productions for the tens years which followed.

He has always supported efforts to secure a new venue, providing it was a significant improvement on Fairbottom Street.

As plans have changed it’s clear that the proposed new theatre has a reduced capacity, can’t hold vital panto performances, and loses key facilities like the ‘fly tower’.

Jim has lobbied and campaigned for it to stay at it’s historic home since.

Labour’s position

  • Back Oldham Coliseum Theatre and secure it for future generations
  • Provide a home which gives it security and which the community supports
  • Retain the historic Fairbottom Street site with investment to set it up for the future
  • Create a body which genuinely puts Oldhamers at the decision making table
  • Recognise arts and culture as central to working people living a decent, fulfilled life.
