TODAY I met with Alistair Gordon, Chief Executive of Keolis who run the Manchester Metrolink system.
We discussed a number of issues including connecting the Oldham line directly to Manchester Piccadilly Station and the ongoing issues with safety on the trams and near stations.
We went over the range of attacks which had taken place the pressure the police are under with very low Officer numbers and rising crimes being recorded.
I suggested improvements to lighting, street level information boards (so that those being dropped off can’t wait before going onto the platform) and ‘touch in’ contactless payment on the tram itself rather than the platform payment machine.
They have recruited a number of Travelsafe officers and I’ve asked to spend a evening out with them to see firsthand the impact they have and the issues they face.
Ultimately it needs a single plan owned by the Police, council, transport operators and the community to tackle anti-social behaviour.
As I’ve said before urgent action is also needed on the magnets drawing in anti-social behaviour like the Hartford Mill and former Westwood Medical Centre.
